Giving Myth: Why giving locally isn't the best way to find high-impact charities

The myth: You should give to charities in your local area

The reality: If you place equal value on people wherever they are, thinking globally is likely to achieve more good

Lots of people feel an intuition that they should help those who live close to them.

However, as you can read more about here, charities doing direct work in the developing world almost invariably have better bang for buck than charities doing direct work in the developed world.

Talk of bang for buck can feel abstract, but it really is saying that more good is being done for each pound you donate.

Of course, this isn't a hard and fast rule, and you may want to consult SoGive's ratings of charities to get a better understanding of whether that rule is likely to apply to a given charity that you are considering.
